History of Acupuncture in China
Minimize

Acupuncture has been used successfully for over five millennia. Stone acupuncture needles dating back to 3000 B.C. have bee found by archeologists in Inner Mongolia, and acupuncture has been widely practiced in China for around 3,500 years. In the 17th century, physicians and missionaries brought acupuncture to Europe, where it slowly gained a foothold. In 1972, James Reston, a journalist for the New York Times, had an emergency appendectomy while in China. He gave acupuncture an enormous boost when he described how it had eased his postoperative pain. Spectacular examples of acupuncture as an alternative to conventional anesthesia during surgery were subsequently reported in the West.

Since the opening of China to the West after the 1970s, many Western physicians have studies acupuncture techniques and use "medical acupuncture", as the practice is known, to supplement conventional treatment in hospitals and pain clinics. In the West, traditionally trained practitioners who are not physicians tend to practice in private clinics. The use of acupuncture in anesthesia is mainly confined to China.

Acupuncture points

Acupuncture points are the locations which focus acupuncture, acupressure, sonopuncture and laser acupuncture treatments.

There are several acupuncture points which are distributed along meridians (these are the connected points which effect specific organs).

There are many acupuncture points associated with each meridian.

The ancient art of Acupressure point therapy releases tension, increases the circulation of blood, and heightens the body's vital life energy to aid healing. Acupuncture points and Acupressure points are identical; however Acupuncture employs needles, while Acupressure points use gentle but firm finger pressure. Acupressure points relieve pain, trauma, burnout, and maintains good health through self-care. By relaxing the body and relieving stress, acupressure strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness.

Tension tends to concentrate around acupressure points (also referred to as acupoints or acu-points). When a muscle is in spasm or chronically tense, the muscle fibers contract due to the secretion of lactic acid caused by fatigue, trauma, stress, chemical imbalances, or poor circulation. As an Acupressure point is held, the muscle tension yields to the finger pressure, enabling the muscle fibers to elongate and relax, blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated. Increased circulation also brings more oxygen and other nutrients to affected areas. This increases the body's resistance to illness and promotes a longer, healthier, more vital life. When the blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, there is a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being.

Use prolonged finger pressure directly on an Acupressure point. Gradual, steady finger pressure for approximately three minutes is ideal. Each acu-point will feel somewhat different when you press it; some points feel tense, while others are often sore or ache when pressed. How much pressure to apply to an acupressure trigger point depends on ones body condition.

Acupuncture points are mapped to fourteen major meridians. One meridian is present at one of the twelve internal organs and in remaining two, one is present along spine and another is present along midline of abdomen.

Recently many extra points are determined in different parts of body such as nose, ears, scalp, hands wrist, feet and ankles.
